Course is over, started on 18. September 2018
18:45 - 20:15

De Theaterschool, Pieter de Hoochweg 222, Rotterdam

Each week, the class will start with a traditional set warm up of around 35 mins which is choreographed so that the students can learn it over a few weeks, but is also easy to follow. The warm up includes the basic technical steps, alongside exercises to help improve strength, stamina and flexibility. The warm up is followed by movement sequences across the room to work on technical steps and presentation of work. This if followed by a set routine being taught, that may be repertoire from existing musicals, but usually choreographed by myself. Each class ends with a deep stretch to cool down and avoid injuries. The style of my class is influenced by the work of Fosse, Robbins, Balanchine and Bennett, and many other renowned musical choreographers. I often teach repertoire from existing shows, and also create my own work for my classes. I am extremely excited to be starting my own course in Rotterdam and look forward to seeing who is going to join for a bit of hard work and a lot of fun.

Neil Dolan

Artistic Director / Dancer / Your favourite human / Teacher / Choreographer

My Humble Bio: It was in the not-so-sunny county of Surry that I trained professionally, at Laine Theatre Arts. Dance fever overcame me and, after throwing away my graduation cap, I performed in many regional productions and live television performances all around the UK.

In 2005, it was time for me to realise my American dream, so I danced my way to the United States, swinging and swaying for NCL Productions on the Spirit Cruise Ship for one whole year.

The dream was rather short-lived though, as I accepted my first musical contract to perform as a swing in the Queen Musical “We Will Rock You” in Köln, Germany. I spent two hippy-happy years as a part of We Will Rock You, learning and enjoying dance in the heart of Deutschland. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to dance and work all over Europe in various musicals. My credits include Show Boat, We Will Rock You (Oslo), Cabaret and Diesel in West Side Story. I will stop here because instead of continuing with explaining my achievements, I’d rather show you in practice an awesome dance routine!

In the hot summer of 2011, I moved to Netherlands to join the ensemble of the original Dutch cast of WICKED at Circus Theatre, Scheveningen. For the last 5 years, I’ve been teaching jazz and choreographing theatre performances all over Holland. My time in Holland (and my whole career, to be very honest) is best described by this quote from Mark Twain: “Find a job you love, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.”

In September 2019, I was graciously made the Artistic Director of the Amsterdam’s Gay Men’s Chorus. Fast forward to today. I am currently based in Rotterdam, teaching all ages, types and skill levels of dance. I am the dance coordinator at JTS Academy, Hoofddorp, choreographing for their three production groups. I am also a guest teacher for the Musical Theatre department at Codarts, University of the Arts in Rotterdam.

My passion for dance and theatre is ever growing and I enjoy nurturing young talent and helping dancers develop, simply because I see a young Neil Dolan in all my students.
