Over Giulia

A professional dancer, actor and singer, Giulia Carotenuto's work has always been multidisciplinary. Although she began following a traditional training path in ballet and modern dance, first in Rome and then in California, once she moved to New York City her work took an beautiful yet unexpected turn, as she discovered her true passion in multidisciplinary and cross-boundary performance.  During her first years in New York City (2008 – 2010) Giulia had the honor and pleasure of working with artists including Mark Dendy, Douglas Dunn, Yara Travieso, Esmé Boyce Dance, JinJu Song-Begin, and Kate Fisher, and was one of eight dancers selected to participate in the Bessie Schonberg Residency at The Yard in Martha’s Vineyard. From 2011 through 2014, Giulia was a member of Palissimo, directed by Slovak choreographer Pavel Zustiak, with whom she created and performed Strange Cargo, the third part of his trilogy The Painted Bird. An extremely challenging and relevant work, The Painted Bird trilogy is a multi-media feast encompassing dance, voice, visual and graphic design, and live music. During those same years she also joined Monica Bill Barnes and Company, touring, teaching, and performing across the United States, in venues including The Kennedy Center in Washington DC and the Joyce Theatre in New York, amongst many others. The work of Monica Bill Barnes is not only strong in its incredible physical rigour, but it is characterized by a focus on vaudevillian clowning techniques, which greatly expanded Giulia's acting repertoire. In 2012 Giulia joined the Faye Driscoll Group with whom she collaborated in the creation of the critically acclaimed work THANK YOU FOR COMING: Attendance. She has been, and still is, performing her role in this work for the past 7 years, touring extensively both nationally and internationally, in countries including the US, Argentina, Australia, France, Ireland, Croatia, and Greece, amongst others.  TYFC: Attendance marked an intense shift into the realm of participatory performance, bringing Giulia to discover her true passion in immersive work and relationship to the audience. Bringing this passion to the next level, Giulia became a member of the Immersive Theatre Company Third Rail Projects in NYC, with whom she performed three leading roles in the critically acclaimed works Then She Fell and The Grand Paradise between 2015 and 2017. "Hailed as one of the foremost companies creating site-specific, immersive, and experiential performance...(Third Rail Projects)...is dedicated to re-envisioning ways in which audiences engage with contemporary performance" (www.thirdrailprojects.com).

During her years working with these phenomenal groups of artists, Giulia continued her exploration, craft, and passion towards work that would bring her as close to the audience as possible, to the point that perhaps sometimes the roles might become reversed. We are afterall always co-creating our realities in the moment they happen.

Currently Giulia is still touring in Faye Driscoll's TYFC: Attendance, and is collaborating on a multitude of projects (mainly duets) with Czeck Director and Choreographer Denisa Musilova.
